If you live in California, you are surely well informed on the dangers of fires, and especially wildfires. It is always a good idea to prepare, plan and to stay informed on what is going on in your area. Here are some tips to follow so you can plan ahead.
FIRE DETECTORS
Smoke alarms are critical for being able to detect a fire quickly and greater increases your chances of making it out safely.
- Install smoke alarms in every area of your house.
- Routinely check and replace batteries.
- Test and replace faulty alarms.
- Always keep alarms operational.
BE PROACTIVE
It is never a bad idea to be prepared and take extra measures to lessen the devastation of a disaster.
- Know how to use and maintain a fire extinguisher properly.
- Make digital copies of all important documents you may have.
- Keep a fireproof safe for valuable items.
ESCAPE PLAN
Have a well-reviewed escape plan with every person in your household. Practice enacting your escape plan and make sure everyone is on the same page.
- Practice crawling low beneath the smoke.
- Check doors for heat with your hand.
- Close doors as you leave.
- Make sure windows are easy to open from the inside.
- Cooperate with fire fighters.
