Are you ready?
Wildfire season is officially here in the state of California and it is very important to be prepared. An evacuation plan requires the involvement of every household member and there are real benefits to being prepared.
Here are three steps to be prepared for Wildfire season:
1.Map out a wildfire action plan - This requires the participation of each household member.
Here is a checklist to help you prepare a wildfire action plan.
- Choose an emergency meeting location outside of the fire hazard area.
- Plan several different escape routes and practice them regularly.
- Have fire extinguishers in place and teach every household member how to properly use them.
- Ensure that your household members know where your gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are and how to use them safely.
- Have a radio or scanner so that you can stay updated on fire alerts
- Designate an out-of-area friend or relative as a point of contact so that you can communicate with household members in case of separation.
- Maintain a list of emergency contact numbers. Keep these posted near your phone and in your emergency supply kit.
- Ensure to have evacuation plans for pets, large animals such as horses, and other livestock.
- Assemble an emergency disaster supply kit – This kit will contain a collection of necessities your household will need in the case of an emergency. Each household member should have their own emergency kit. It is also recommended everyone keeps an emergency kit in their vehicle in case access to the household is not available.

- Make a household communication plan – Communication networks and electricity may be compromised in a wildfire and that is why it is important to have a communication plan in place.
Every member of the household should be considered in creating this plan. It is a must that the methods are well communicated with everyone at a level that they understand. Rehearsing this plan regularly will help assure that everyone is on the same page and know exactly what to do in case of an emergency.
