50 MPH Winds hit North California
2/3/2023 (Permalink)
a branch fell from a tree onto a roof causing leaks
The north state of California was hit hard with heavy rains and 50MPH winds. A customer called in and reported a tree branch had fell and hit his roof, causing a hole that allowed water to penetrate into the attic and eventually through the ceiling and into the living room. SERVPRO of South Shasta County's emergency response team was on the scene right away and tarped off the roof, preventing more water from getting in the home. Due to heavy winds the tarp blew off the house. SERVPRO was notified and again sent a crew out the same day. The crew then came in with blowers and a dehumidifier to try and get water out of the air and floor, this helped mitigate the moisture in the affected area.

Dealing with Storm Damage

Call us today at 530-241-2424
As spring nears, the chance of inclement weather increases. Some would welcome the beauty and peace of rain, while others have had quite a different experience. Regardless of our viewpoint, we can all agree that storm damage repair can be a daunting and sometimes dangerous task. Here are some tips to help in the unfortunate event that you are dealing with storm damage.
Turn off your power before cleanup
Even in the instance that nothing electrical is visibly broken, the best thing to do before cleanup is to shut off the electricity to your home. Often, it is in the places we don’t expect that can harm us the most, and something with the potential danger of electricity, you will want to take every precaution you can. Locate your fuse box, turn off the main breaker along with each individual circuit breaker. This is especially important if your home is flooded.
Board up windows
Strong winds, and fallen trees. One of the most common damages a storm can cause is broken windows. As soon as possible you will want to board up any broken windows to secure your home. This will help keep out looters, rodents, and help to prevent any further weather damage. There are ways to board up your home that can potentially cause more harm, so be sure to consult a professional before taking on the task of boarding up your home.
Take pictures
As they say “a picture is worth a thousand words.” Before any cleanup ensues, be sure to take plenty of pictures of the damages caused. This will aid you greatly in filing an insurance claim. Taking plenty of photos is the best form of evidence to accurately show damages, and obtain the most from your insurance company.
Canal & Irrigation Safety
2/18/2022 (Permalink)
Call us today at 530-241-2424
With temperatures rising once more, most bodies of water seem like a good place to cool off - but canals and ditches one should steer clear of. They may look inviting and refreshing, but they are very dangerous to enter. That’s why most canals have fences placed around them.
Canals are often manmade structures that are used to transport water for irrigation and other general uses. Most canals were originally constructed in areas without a large population, but as an area surrounding the canal becomes urbanized, the canal can run through neighborhoods making it potentially dangerous.
Canals can have fast underwater currents deceiving the naked eye, strong enough to sweep away any sized human. Also, many canals have steep, slippery sides that are sometimes impossible to crawl out of.
Irrigation ditches are not as large, but are equally dangerous since they can contain trash and other debris such as rocks, glass, barbed wire and other hazardous objects that are unable to be seen from the surface. Pesticides, herbicides and other pollutants can be found in irrigation ditch water and it is definitely not safe to drink or swim in.
Some ditches even have undertows, if you find yourself caught in one of these you can easily be pulled underwater and your chances of getting out are very slim.
Here's a few tips on keeping you and your family safe near irrigation canals and ditches:
- Never swim in or play around canals or irrigation ditches
- Never walk closely along the edge of a canal or irrigation ditch
- Never jump in to rescue a pet or object. Instead call 911 for help.
If you want to beat the rising heat, do so safely! SERVPRO of South Shasta County wants you to stay safe.

For 24/7 Water Damage response call SERVPRO of South Shasta County at 530-241-2424
With spring just around the corner, bad weather is bound to occur in even the sunniest of places. And after such a large event, it’s important to check your house afterwards. Intense rain can flood your gutters as well as downspouts, saturating the soil around your foundation. “Start from the bottom and work your way up.” Is an easy way to remember where to start when it comes to checking up on your home.
Basement: The first priority is to check your basement and crawl spaces, as water can easily build up if there are any cavities outside of your home.
Flooring: The next step is to scan each and every room within your home for signs of water damage. If any of these items are wet, remove the flooring and dry these areas as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
Walls: Next check along your walls, especially the base of them. Stains or discoloration, as well as bubbling or peeling is a good sign that moisture has leaked into the walls.
Attic: Make sure that your shingles are secure and that there is no structural damage on the topmost interior of your home. A sign that there is a potential cavity is damp or wet insulation.
Gutters: The last step is to clean any debris that may have built up inside your gutters, as the last thing you’ll want when another storm comes is full gutters and clogged downspouts.
Your home is the safest place you can be when a storm occurs, and we want to be sure it stays that way.
If you experience flooding or water where it shouldn’t be, SERVPRO of South Shasta County can provide you with any emergency and nonemergency storm damage. Leaking roofs, leaking pipes, fallen trees, flooding, and much more.
Tips When Calling 911
2/16/2022 (Permalink)
Call us 24/7 at 530-241-2424 or look us up on the web. www.SERVPROsouthshastacounty.com
In the event of an emergency, we have been told to call 911. This patches us through to our local emergency responders who are dispatched to a specific location. But with the introduction of cell phones into our daily lives in the 1980’s, a crinkle was added to the 911 dispatch system.
Previously, all 911 calls coming from cell phones were automatically routed to the California Highway Patrol 911 dispatch centers, which overloaded the call centers and slowed down responses to potential victims. Now cell phones use either GPS or cell tower triangulation so that a dispatch center can be identified and the call is routed to the proper location.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) does have jurisdiction over state freeways and handles emergency calls on these roadways. So some cell calls made from city streets that are near a freeway will be routed to the CHP.
One way to ensure that a 911 operator can pinpoint your location is to use your landline to make a 911 call whenever possible. A landline is plugged into a specific address, so an Emergency Response Team will know exactly where to respond.
However, if you find yourself in an emergency situation and you only have your cell phone, use it to call 911. Your call will be routed to an emergency response team who will send help to your location no matter how you place your call.
If you have storm damage, water damage or mold damage call SERVPRO of South Shasta County. We do FREE inspections.

Whether you believe the changing of climates is our influence, an inevitable change beyond our control, or somewhere in between, Its undeniable at this point we are reaping the planets indifference. Here in Northern California, we are experiencing it firsthand, and to adapt we should brace ourselves going into the winter season. It will without a doubt be a nice change of pace after all the surrounding wildfires and smoke we have become accustomed too, but it always pays to be prepared.
Here are some tips to prepare you for the coming winter season.
- Inspect your roof before rainfall and snowfall. Make certain your shingles are secure and extract any branches or debris that may obstruct water flowing off the roof.
- Remove debris from your gutters. When there is an excessive amount of debris in your gutters it can cause back flow of water and cause a leaking roof.
- Keep sandbags handy in case there is a rainstorm that is causing flooding in the area.
- Also, if you live in higher elevation, it is never a bad idea to have your plumbing inspected to prevent freezing of pipes. This may cause a disastrous water damage in the future.

What Happens During A Hailstorm?
1/18/2021 (Permalink)
If you have hail damage call SERVPRO of South Shasta County 24/7 for all your water damage needs at 530-241-2424.
There are 4 types of severe storms that can cause heavy damage to your home, office, and outbuildings in the Northern California area. These storms consist of hail, lighting, wind, and rain.
In Northern California we rarely see hail the size of dimes and quarters. However, June of 2019 proved to be a hailstorm to remember. Many of us watched in disbelief as the quarter size hail hit our car windshields, plants, and roof tops. Watching the damage unfold right in front of us for a full half hour.
The damage after the storm was a mess. Roof tops, skylights, and windows had been torn, tattered and broke by ice balls the size of rubber balls you find in a vending machine at the grocery store. Many people were not prepared for such an unexpected hailstorm in June. Once the built-up hail on roof tops began to melt many people found themselves with water damage on their ceilings.
If you find yourself in a similar situation due to any type of storm damage call SERVPRO of South Shasta County 24/7. We can send our expert Water Techs out to cover up any continuous water damage from entering your home, dry out and monitor existing water damage and repair water damages.

Are you ready for the storm
1/20/2020 (Permalink)
Although we aren't experiencing a storm at the moment, we need to accept the fact that we live in California and may get a random storm tomorrow.
The effects of a powerful storm
El Nino did hit us hard the past couple of winters, and we made sure to remain on standby with extra materials in case we were needed. We went out to a job this weekend that had extreme mold due to a leak from past storms. Sometimes, these mold findings aren't made visible for a long time. It's always what you don't see that causes the most damage.
We battle the water and fire damage, as well as creating estimate, conducting inspections, getting additional training, and working out conflicts with insurance companies. Dedication is our middle name!
Water job details
The roof on this home had been caved and the floor was buckling due to the rain from the storm. SERVPRO technicians went to the home right away, and determined the home could be repaired to preloss condition. If the homeowner had waited any longer, the entire home may have been absolutely soaked! While repairing the home under this condition may not be impossible, other factors may have made repair difficult. The amount of water led to a small mold growth; we removed the mold, and applied an antimicrobial agent to prevent further growth. Part of the floor had to be removed, as seen in this photo.

Protect Your Home From Flooding
11/8/2019 (Permalink)
If your house floods. Call SERVPRO of South Shasta County at 530-241-2424--24/7. Emergency Response Available
One of the most usual places for your home to be flooded is the basement. Even if you do not live on a floodplain or anywhere near a body of water, basement flooding can still be a possibility. The water can come from numerous places such as:
- A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe
- Heavy rain which can cause surface water to pool around your home
- Storm
- Foundation drainage failure
- Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure
Fortunately, basement floods are 100 percent preventable. Below are some steps that you can take to ensure that your basement will not flood.
Clean Your Gutters and Down Spouts.
It is important that you clean your gutter a couple of times a year in the fall and the spring. Keeping gutters free of debris and positioning downspouts away from the foundation can keep storm water from collapsing your gutter. The goal is to drain storm water at least three feet away.
Inspect your house’s foundation.
Simply inspecting the exterior foundation and your basement’s walls and floors can save you money. If your home has already been damaged by water, call SERVPRO of South Shasta counties and we will be here to help. 530-241-2424
Check your sump pump.
If you have a below-grade sump pump, check to make sure it is free of debris. If you have a portable pump, position it in the lowest part of the basement and make sure it is connected to a power source.
Inspect your sewage and septic system.
If you have not had your sewer inspected or your septic tank cleaned, spring is an appropriate time to address these concerns. During periods of heavy rainfall, clogged sewers and over-taxed septic’s are a disaster waiting to happen.
Did these tips find you too late? If your home has suffered water damage - call SERVPRO of South Shasta. We can make it "Like it never even happened." We are available 24/7.

11/8/2019 (Permalink)
File claim with Insurance if you have a water damage. SERVPRO of South Shasta County works direct with your insurance. 530-241-2424
Something to Know:
Every insurance policy is different. Therefore, what will be covered may only be determined by reading your policy or calling your insurance agent/insurance company to have them determine coverage.
Knowledge is Power:
Be sure you know who your insurance company is and how to contact them. You may want to list the phone number for your insurance company on your refrigerator for easy access. You could also add your insurance company's 24 hour emergency contact number to your cell phone to have ready at all times. You never know when this information is going to be important.
Stay Calm:
This experience can be upsetting. It's important to stay calm when you are talking to your insurance company so they can ask all the essential questions to set up your claim and get the ball rolling.
Take Pictures:
Document the situation every step of the way to help your insurance company understand the full extent of the damage. Take pictures of every room that sustained damage, structural materials affected and personal items. These pictures will help your adjuster understand the full picture of what happened and what will be involved in restoring your house and the contents affected.
Ask Questions:
Resolving the water damage issue can be very confusing. Feel free to ask as many questions as you can think of to your insurance company so that you understand what will happen next every step of the way. It's important to know what your roles are and what your insurance company will be doing for you.
Use a company with IICRC Certified Technicians:
While there are many companies that may be willing to help you clean up from your water damage, it is important to utilize a company that has technicians who have been trained to properly perform mitigation.
